Of Mice and Men

I am currently reading "Of Mice and Men," by John Steinbeck. It is a relatively short book, so right now I am on page 58, a little more than half-way. The book is written very well. It is very interesting, a gripping tale that could almost be called a thriller. I think this is one of Steinbeck's best books. "Of Mice and Men" is about two men: George, who is small and a fast talker, and Lennie, an enormous man who thinks like a child. Together, they work hard in a vegetable field owned by a plantation, hoping one day to one an acre of land and a shack they can call home. But they face many difficulties in doing this, the biggest problem being Lennie's inability to guard against flirtatious women. But even George cannot foresee the enormous consequence Lennie's actions will have on their relationship forever.

I have really enjoyed the book so far. One of the things that I find most interesting about "Of Mice and Men" is the dialogue. The men speak in very rough, western talk. I like that the author wrote it like that because, to me, it helps me understand the story better and get more involved in it. The plot also definitely hooks you in, and the excellent writing style makes this book a pleasure to read. I predict Lennie will accidentally hurt the flirtatious woman, therefore resulting in either Lennie being killed by the husband of the flirtatious woman or George having to save Lennie again. I am very excited to see how the novel ends, and I would highly recommend it to anyone.

  7. This does indeed so like an interesting novel to read, sweet and short. Don't get me wrong huge books with tons of awesome content are nice but it's also great to sit down and read a brilliant novel and finish it in 1 or 2 days. Also what's cooler than using different dialect that makes you think more about what the characters are saying?

  9. Your description of the characters and the dialogue really intrigues me and makes me want to read this book. I like how the front cover depicts the two men together in a pasture/meadow setting. The setting seems to be an architypel setting, throughout many books, maybe not the most popular one but definately a shared one. I look forward to discusing this book and learning about the two men and the things they do.

  10. Your summary was great- concise but including all the useful information! Of Mice and Men sounds like an interesting book. Lennie and George's personalities seem so different, yet they are good friends. I hope they get to fulfill their dream!

  11. Hey Jocelyn! I loved your summary of the book Of Mice and Men, mainly because I had always thought it to be a boring old dusty book. You make it sound so much more interesting! The characters George and Lennie remind me a lot of the main characters in Freak the Mighty (took me a long time to remember the name of the book). Max and Lennie are both big and slow, and Kevin and George are both fast talkers and have to get their friends out of trouble. Additionally, both those character relationships are similar to Sherlock and John's (Sherlock BBC) in that they can't live without each other and are complements to each other's personalities and strengths/weaknesses. Basically, you did a great job in convincing me to want to read Of Mice and Men, and apparently I can relate everything to anything. But you already knew that.
